Andrew Crockett Memorial Lecture: "The art of central banking in a centrifugal world"
A biennial event inaugurated by the BIS in 2013 to commemorate Sir Andrew Crockett, the Bank's General Manager from 1994 to 2003.
This lecture is part of the virtual 20th Annual Conference webinars and panel discussions that were livestreamed on our website from 23 to 28 June.
This year's lecture was delivered by Mark Carney, former Governor of the Bank of England and the Bank of Canada and former Chair of the Financial Stability Board, on "The art of central banking in a centrifugal world". The lecture has been followed by a panel discussion moderated by BIS General Manager Agustín Carstens.
Abstract
As new general purpose technologies are transforming a host of industries and economies, finance will also need to adapt. In his talk, Mark Carney shared his thoughts on the future of money and the role of central banks in this new digital and decentralised age.
About the lecturer
Mark Carney served as Governor of the Bank of England from 2013 to 2020 and Governor of the Bank of Canada from 2008 until 2013.
He is currently the UN Special Envoy for Climate Action and Finance, and Prime Minister Johnson's Finance Adviser for COP26. He is also Vice Chair of Brookfield Asset Management, and member of the Arnhold Distinguished Fellowship Program Board within Conservation International, the Global Advisory Board of PIMCO, the Group of Thirty and the Foundation Board of the World Economic Forum. He is an external member of Stripe's Board as well as a member of the boards of Bloomberg Philanthropies, the Peterson Institute for International Economics and the Hoffman Institute for Global Business and Society at INSEAD.
Mr Carney was Chair of the Financial Stability Board from 2011 to 2018, Chair of the Global Economy Meeting and Economic Consultative Committee of the BIS from 2018 to 2020, and First Vice-Chair of the European Systemic Risk Board from 2013 to 2020.
