Biographical note: Mario Giovanoli, former General Counsel

Mario Giovanoli was General Counsel from March 1989 to December 2005.

Mr Giovanoli joined the BIS Legal Service in 1968, was appointed Head of the Legal Service in 1987, and was the first to hold the title of General Counsel.

From 1987 to 2007, he taught monetary, banking and financial law at the Law School of the University of Lausanne. He was Chairman of the Committee on International Monetary Law of the International Law Association (MOCOMILA) from 1995 to 2004.

Mr Giovanoli is the author of various publications on national and international monetary and financial law. He holds degrees in political science and law from the University of Lausanne.
